Below are 3 simple age based problems. These are very simple and once you form the equations correctly based on the information in questions, you will find no difficulty in solving hence.

Question 1

Rama Rao, a grand father is living in Hyderabad. He has a number of sons and his sons have children equivalent to number of brothers each son has. His age is between 70 and 90 years and is sum total of number of sons and grand children. Can you guess his age?

a) 72 b) 89 c) 81 d) none of these.

Answer : c) 81.

Solution :

Let the age of Rama Rao be x. Let number of sons be n.
Each son would have n - 1 brothers. But this number is equal to the number of children each son has.
Therefore total number of grandchildren of Rama Rao will be n x (n - 1).
It is given that Rama Rao's age is the sum of the number of sons and the number of grandsons.
Therefore n + n (n - 1) = x
Or n + n²-n = x
or n² = x
If we substitute the options from a to c for x, we can easily infer that only option c) 81 which is a perfect square can fit the equation (giving n = 9).
Therefore, Rama Rao's age is 81 and number of his sons is 9.

Question 2

A cinema actress was asked to tell her age in a movie celebration function. Her reply was “ Take my age four years hence, multiply it by 4 and then subtract 4 times my age four years ago and you will know how old am I”. What was the age of the cine actress?

a) 24 b) 30 c)48 d)32

Answer : d) 32

Solution :

Let x be the age of the actress then.
(x + 4) 4 - 4 (x – 4) = x
4x + 16 - 4x + 16 = x
x = 32 years.

Question 3

Naresh Kumar, father of Dimple Kumar is 4 years more than four times the age of his daughter. Four years hence, Naresh Kumar’s age will be 12 years more than twice the age of his daughter after 4 years. Find the present age of Naresh Kumar.

a) 28 b)32 c)36 d)40

Answer : a) 28

Solution :

Let the age of daughter be x years. Then Naresh Kumar’s age will be 4x + 4
Therefore (4x + 4 + 4) = 2 (x + 4) + 12
4x + 8 = 2x + 8 + 12
2 x = 12.
x = 6
Age of Naresh Kumar now = 4x + 4 = (4 X 6) + 4 = 28
